Nexus took part in Þjóðarspegillinn 2010, an annual social science research conference. Members sent in five articles and held talks on the 29th of November 2010, and were well received. The articles are available here.

Auka konur í friðargæslu öryggi kvenna? Um kyn í friðargæslu

Viðfangsefni þessarar greinar er að draga saman fræðilega umræðu um kyn í friðargæslu. Með því er skapaður grundvöllur fyrir rannsókn á framlagi kvenna í friðargæslu til öryggis kvenna á átakasvæðum á erlendri grund. Íslensk utanríkisstefna hefur í auknum mæli lagt áherslu á kvenfrelsi og er sú nálgun kynnt sem ein grunnstoð stefnunnar. Þessi samantekt leggur grunninn að væntanlegri rannsókn, en markmið hennar er að kynnast því hverjar upplifanir og skoðanir íslenskra kvenna sem hafa starfað í friðargæsluverkefnum fyrir íslenska ríkið eru.

Arctic security: Policy analysis of the circumpolar states

Since the end of the Cold War the security scenario in the Arctic region has changed significantly. Academics have written about new dimensions of security states must now take into consideration. The purpose of this article is to compare the declared policies of the eight member states of the Arctic Council – Canada, Denmark/Greenland, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden and the United States – focusing on sovereignty, security and defense. The purpose is to establish: a) whether the new security scenario is reflected in these states’ official policy documents, and b) whether there is a difference between the policies of the five coastal states – Canada, Denmark/Greenland, Norway, Russia and the USA – and the other three circumpolar states.

State security or human security and the security debate in international relations: An Icelandic perspective

The intent of this paper is to analyse the concept of security and to show how the international security debate influenced Icelandic security policy in the late twentieth century. Traditional definitions of security – which focus on state actions and concentrate on power politics, emphasising state power and military might – dominated the security debate from the late 1940s. In 1980s and after the Cold War in the 1990s it became more popular to focus on human/individual security: emphasizing economic security, societal security, environmental security, political security, poverty, human rights and cultural security. This has been termed as a broadening of the security concept.
